News From Show-Me-Columbia

Submitted by: John C. Savage, Director of Employment Services for ACT www.actservices.org

Columbia Map The Show-Me-Columbia partners have chosen to focus on the guiding principles of Employer Engagement & Business Partnerships, Career Planning & Early Work Experience, and the Integration of Systems. We have a roundtable breakfast scheduled with local business champions on March 11th to discuss how they benefit from a workforce that includes individuals with disabilities, the challenges of hiring a diverse workforce, and how service providers can better assist them with their business needs. This is intended to be the beginning of a process which will culminate in Show-Me-Columbia hosting a Chamber of Commerce membership breakfast where local business champions will speak about their experiences.Columbia has a number of initiatives going focused on improving career planning and early work experiences which the SMC members hope to assist with growing and evolving. Most of our partners already are members of these initiatives, which include our local community transition team and an on-site internship experience for students in a local business. The transition team and a local community network of provider agencies (including all members of SMC) are working to develop a resource tool which will provide better information about existing local services. Additionally, having all these partners at the same table is helping to resolve issues of redundant services and identifying gaps in services.
